The castle was built around 123 AD as a tomb for Emperor Hadrian and his family. Over the centuries, the structure's purpose changed from a tomb, a grisly prison, to a luxurious residence. Several rooms of the castle house an exhibition of armor and weapons from the storerooms of the Museo Nazionale del Palazzo di Venezia. The exhibition features the works of renowned plankers from the 15th and 16th centuries.
