Since its founding in 1896, the Worcester Art Museum has amassed a collection of 38,000 objects, ranging from the ancient Near East and Asia to European and American paintings and sculptures, as well as works by contemporary artists from around the world. WAM has a history of making major acquisitions, such as a medieval chapter house, a Worcester Hunt mosaic, a 15th-century Spanish ceiling, and a Flemish Last Judgement tapestry. In 2013, the Museum acquired the John Woodman Higgins Armory Collection, comprising 2,000 pieces of arms and armor.
