Anton Peffenhauser

Anton Peffenhauser (1525-1603), Augsburg, Germany.

Stigma - Triskelion (Greek Three-legged) in the form of three running legs.

One of the most famous Augsburg armorers is Anton Peffenhauser. A large number of his exquisite works have survived to this day and are displayed in many museums around the world. He began his career in 1545, crafting elaborately decorated armor for dukes and royalty. He became so wealthy and influential in society that even the Augsburg guild of craftsmen, which oversaw the quality of local craftsmen, had little influence over him. From 1582 onward, Peffenhauser began working for the Saxon court. He crafted 32 engraved suits of armor for the Electors of Saxony, Christian I and Christian II, 17 of which are preserved in the Dresden collection. One of his most famous fluted suits of armor was made for the Portuguese King Sebastião and is now housed in the Royal Armory (Real Armeria) in Madrid. Anton Peffenhauser's hallmark and family crest is the triskelion - a three-legged design in the form of three running legs clad in greaves and sabatons, emerging from one point, which was an ancient symbol of infinity.
