The Fitzwilliam Museum owns over 400 pieces of armor, including horse armor. The majority of the armor collection is European, although armor from Asia and the Middle East is also represented, including samurai armor, Indian chainmail, and Ottoman plate. The best-represented pieces are 16th-century German and Northern Italian armor, primarily field armor, but with some tournament and parade examples. The collection includes several full and half suits of armor, as well as decorative helmets and pieces from partial or unrelated sets of armor. A limited number of shields are also contained in the Fitzwilliam collection, which also contains examples of miniature armor models.

The Fitzwilliam Museum Armory also contains a diverse collection of approximately 350 weapons and is particularly strong in medieval European edged weapons. The collection includes various bladed and pointed weapons for close combat, crossbows and accessories, small cannonballs and cannonballs, daggers, maces, and a spear. Swords of several different types are also present, including broadswords, longswords, sabres, rapiers, ceremonial swords, and a small child's sword. Specialized swords from various countries, particularly the Islamic world and Asia, are also included.

Most of the Fitzwilliam's European collection of arms and armour was the result of a single generous bequest from the private collection of Mr. James Henderson, largely assembled in the 1920s from the Radziwill family collection in Nieśwież in Poland. Following this bequest, other items from this original collection were added to the Fitzwilliam's collection. This created what is now considered one of the finest collections in England, second only to the royal and national collections in range and quality.

The museum displays the works of famous masters:

Kolman Helmschmidt, Augsburg, Germany.

Filippo Negroli, Milan, Italy.

Меч викингов

Если судить по археологическим исследованиям скандинавских захоронений IX—X века, мечи являлись самым распространённым оружием. Однако, скорее всего, их просто тщательнее сохраняли, в то время топоры...
