Arms and Armor
Historical weapons were never simply instruments of killing and destruction. Rather, they primarily served for personal defense and were proud signs of one's ability to defend oneself. Much attention was paid to technical execution. Weapons served as costumes or fashion accessories, influenced by both developments in defense technology and general fashion trends. Last but not least, they illustrated the social status of their owner. Their historical, emotional, and aesthetic value make weapons sought-after collectibles.

Collection Origin.
The Bavarian National Museum's weapons collection consistently includes complex suits of armor and swords, halberds and spears, crossbows, and firearms from the 14th to the mid-19th centuries. Some of these are historical memorabilia from the extensive Wittelsbach dynasty. Other items came to the collection from neighboring territories in Bavaria. Combat,

Hunting, and Splendor.
Simpler weapons were developed for battlefield combat, while more refined versions served their purpose in tournaments and displays. Weapons designed for hunting, an important aspect of court culture, were equally valuable. Therefore, indispensable hunting rifles and crossbows were followed by gunpowder bottles, deer trappers, and hunting bags.

The museum displays the works of famous masters:

Pompeo della Cesa, Milan, Italy.
