Travnik Castle - Tvrđava Travnik, Travnik, Central Bosnia Canton, Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Toričan, Oštrac, Grac, Vrbenac grad, Škaf or Bosnić grad and Kaštel are medieval forts that existed in this area, but unfortunately they did not manage to be preserved to a sufficient extent. Only parts remain to testify to their existence, and of the numerous medieval fortifications built in this area, the Old Town fortress is the best preserved. Judging by traditions, the method of construction and other indicators, it is assumed that the fortress was built in the second half of the 14th or the first half of the 15th century, and that its builder was King Tvrtko II Kotromanić, but it is stated that the possible builder was also King Stjepan Dabiša. After the capture, the Turks added to the fortress over time and turned it into a strong defensive fortress, continuing to develop the settlement at the foot of the city. In the preserved written sources in the report of the Prince of Trogir, Travnik is mentioned for the first time in 1463, when Sultan Mehmed II the Conqueror passed through it in his campaign to Jajce. It is assumed that the name Travnik originated from the term used to denote the grassy part of the valley "travnik" or from the name of the official who harvested the herb. At the very entrance, coming to the city from the east, you will be greeted by a scene worth a thousand words, a picture that photographers and painters dream about, an inexhaustible inspiration for writers, the Old Town, the fortress of the forgotten name of Garbun. Covered in a veil of mystery, the fortress has withstood time and people for centuries, stands firm and hides the doubt about the Bosnian king who built it over Hendek, a stream that flows in winter and dries up in summer. This national monument of BiH with various traces of architectural phases from the medieval, Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian eras is a rare and valuable example of a fortress in our area. On a natural hill above the town of Travnik, surrounded by watercourses, stands the Stari Grad fortress, which was built during times of danger from the Ottoman invasion. In 1999, the process of renovation and revitalization of the fortress was initiated, and today it represents the center of cultural and entertainment life in Travnik. The people of Travnik have long been accustomed to the fortress hosting various traditional events, painting colonies, multi-faceted permanent or temporary exhibitions, and various events, and they are very happy to attend in large numbers.
