Tirana Castle - Kalaja e Tiranës, Tirana, Tirana County, Republic of Albania.

This castle is located in the historical center of the city of Tirana, in one of its most frequented areas. It represents a field fortification with a rectangular plan of 160 x 120m, with the longest part east - west. The time of construction of the castle is thought to be in the time frame between 1633 and the second half of the 18th century. The castle was integrated very quickly with the growth of the city, which began to expand as a result of the development of crafts, trade, etc.

In 1798 it fell into the hands of the Toptani family from Kruja. In 1817 the Bushatllinjtë of Shkodra, who were in constant war with the Toptanët, besieged the castle for a long period of time, finally destroying part of the city and its walls. Of the surrounding walls of the former castle today we can only see a part of the northeastern wall.

The castle functioned until 1832, when it was subsequently destroyed by Mehmet Rushit Pasha.

A new pedestrian zone has recently been created within the walls of the Tirana Castle, transforming it into a recreational space for the capital. This area serves as an environment where local artisans and traditions, cuisine and art of Tirana are promoted.
