Weitra Castle - Schloss Weitra, Weitra, Lower Austria, Republic of Austria.

Between 1201 and 1208, Hadmar II of Kuenring had the fortified town of Weitra built. The castle stood to the south, at the highest point of the terraced granite plateau.

Since its founding, Weitra held the central military, administrative, judicial, and ecclesiastical functions within the so-called "Districtus Witrensis." The fortified town also served as a central market center and a refuge during times of war.
