On March 30, 1996, the Royal Armourers Museum in Leeds opened to the public. The new building, designed by architect Derek Walker, is the headquarters of the Royal Armouries complex, housing the bulk of the museum's collections.
The Leeds museum was built not only to showcase the national collection but also to tell the story of the development of arms and armour through objects, a wide range of audiovisual presentations, computer interactives, and interpretations to bring the objects to life.
In addition to five galleries housing 5,000 objects on permanent display, the museum includes the Hall of Steel, a giant staircase whose walls are adorned with trophy displays consisting of 2,500 objects, reminiscent of the historical trophy displays erected by the 17th-century Armoury Tower.
The museum displays the works of famous masters:
Anton Peffenhauser, Augsburg, Germany.
Konrad Seusenhofer, Innsbruck, Austria.
