Rocca Medievale di Offagna is one of the best-preserved fortresses in the Marche region. Built in the mid-15th century to protect the Republic of Ancona, it today houses a museum housing an interesting collection of medieval weapons and armor.
The core of the exhibition is the Museo delle Armi Antiche, which displays:
full plate armor from the 15th and 16th centuries;
bascinets, sallets, barbutes, and other types of helmets;
swords, longswords, daggers, and combat knives;
halberds, pikes, spears, and battle axes;
crossbows, arquebuses, and early firearms;
shields, chain mail, brigandines, and horse armor. The museum's unique feature is that the weapons are displayed within the fortress itself: visitors pass through casemates, guardrooms, the castellan's quarters, and climb the main tower. This creates a truly medieval fortress-like experience, not just a museum hall.
The castle is also renowned for its annual historical festival, the Feste Medievali di Offagna, which features knightly tournaments, historical reenactments, sword fights, archery, and displays of historical armor.
Compared to armor museums in Italy, Offagna's collection is smaller in scale than those in Florence (the Stibbert Museum), Turin (the Royal Armory), and Brescia (the Luigi Marzoli Museum). However, its main advantage is the opportunity to see armor and weapons within an authentic medieval fortress with its perfectly preserved defensive architecture.
