Gallery of Arms and Armor
This impressive collection of bladed weapons and armor demonstrates the (technical) evolution of weaponry.
The gallery illustrates the period from the Middle Ages to the late 18th century. The core of the collection is the Dukes of Burgundy and the Spanish Habsburg family, which flourished under Emperor Charles V (1500-1558). Charles V presided over an empire "on which the sun never sets." He managed his affairs from his palace in Brussels, among other places.
The exhibition presents the defensive armament of a medieval knight. Protection was initially limited to simple chainmail and gradually evolved into full armor, over partial armor covering the upper body or thighs. In the 17th century, leather coats worn with gloves, arm and leg protection, cuirass, and burgonet appeared.
Weapons have always been an example of modern technology. Old weapons (artillery, firearms, and bladed weapons) are no different in this regard.
Weapons are not only associated with war; they are also used for recreation. This is evidenced by beautiful children's armor, tournament weapons, hunting weapons, and powder horns.
The museum displays the works of famous masters:
Anton Peffenhauser, Augsburg, Germany.
Wolfgang Grosschedel, Landshut, Germany.
