Glasgow Museums holds an international collection of arms and armour. It comprises approximately 7,200 objects and 3,000 associated manuscripts, dating from 2500 BC to 2000 AD. This collection includes arms and armour from Europe, with notable items from the Low Countries, Italy, France, Spain, and Germany, as well as a significant collection of Scottish objects. It represents all the major components of arms and armour, including full suits of armour and helmets, shields, swords and other bladed weapons, spears, lances, halberds, and crossbows. It also includes firearms, ranging from early muskets, pistols, and associated equipment to modern pistols, rifles, shotguns, and machine guns. The collection also includes small cannon, projectiles, and cannonballs, illustrating the development of larger-calibre weapons. There is also a large collection of military equipment for horseback riding, such as spurs and horse armour. Iconic items in the collection include a full suit of plate armour for both man and horse, made for the 1st Earl of Pembroke around 1550, and the famous Milanese Avantian armour, dating from 1440 and considered the earliest nearly complete suit of plate armour in the world. The collection also includes the R.L. Scott Library, an extensive archive of rare and unique books, manuscripts, and other ephemera relating to medieval combat practice.

The museum displays the works of famous masters:

Franz Grosschedel, Landshut, Germany.

Jacob Halder, Greenwich, English.
