Sumber Castle

Sumber Castle - Kaštel Šumber, Sumber, Istria County, Republic of Croatia.

Sumber Castle was built on the site of an ancient settlement in the former village of Strari Grad. It was first mentioned in documents dating back to 872 and 950, when the Byzantine Emperor Constantine confirmed the presence of Slavs in these areas. In 1260, the castle passed into the possession of the Schönberg family, giving it its name. In 1367, it was inherited by the ruling Habsburg family and became part of the Pazin County. It subsequently changed hands several times, including the Venetians in 1420. During this time, it was transformed from a fortress into a Renaissance-style chateau with the addition of a round tower in the corner.
After the war ended in 1617, the castle's defensive functions lost their significance, and it was converted into a comfortable residence.
Now this small castle has a polygonal shape, with two round towers in the southeastern and southwestern corners. On the inside of the southern wall there are remains of a long and narrow one-story palace, and another small house is located in the north-eastern corner of the castle.
