Sisak Castle - Kaštel Sisak, Sisak, Sisak-Moslavina County, Republic of Croatia.

The castle near the town of Sisak was built during a time of increasing threat of a devastating Turkish attack on Croatia. The Bishop of Zagreb commissioned the construction. Construction lasted from 1544 to 1550.
It is triangular in shape and consists primarily of brick with stone details. At each corner of the triangle is a round tower with a conical roof. The towers are connected by thick walls over 30 meters long with loopholes. Situated on the riverbank, the fortress is naturally protected on one side by the current.
Throughout its history, Sisak has been repeatedly attacked and damaged and rebuilt several times.
During the last Ottoman campaign in June 1593, the Turkish army led by Hasan Pasha besieged Sisak with the intention of capturing Zagreb after its capture. This would have brought all of Old Slavonia into Ottoman hands. But on June 22, 1593, troops from Zagreb, Karlovac, and Styria, totaling 5,000 cavalry and foot soldiers, rushed to Sisak's aid. As a result of the bloody battle, the Turks suffered a heavy defeat, and the Pasha himself lost his life. This battle became a turning point, signaling the end of further Ottoman conquest.
After the easing of Ottoman pressure on Croatian lands in the 17th century, the fortress changed hands several times and was never abandoned. The last serious damage it suffered was during World War II, when a shell hit and partially destroyed the Northwest Tower.
Currently, it houses the local city museum, founded in 1951, containing several archaeological, ethnographic, and numismatic collections.
