Pula Fortress

Pula Fortress - Kaštel Pula, Pula, Istria County, Republic of Croatia.

The city of Pula has a rich history and was founded by the ancient Greeks, who established one of their first colonies in the northern Adriatic here. Subsequently, the city belonged to the Romans, Venetians, Lombards, Ostrogoths, Franks, and Slavs.
The fortress was built in the 13th century, and later, in the 14th century, it was rebuilt by the Venetians into a heavily fortified citadel. The castle forts remained in use until the end of World War I.
Several parts of the fortress remain, including the triangular bastions and the central tower. In the 17th century, the fortress was rebuilt by the French architect Antoine de Ville.
The fortress is located on a hill above the city and offers magnificent views. From here, one can also see a chasm with a cave shrouded in many legends.
The fortress now houses the local museum of the Istria region.
