Medvedgrad Castle - Kaštel Medvedgrad, Zagreb, City of Zagreb, Republic of Croatia.
Medvedgrad Castle today is located almost in the suburbs of Zagreb, the capital of Croatia. Located at an altitude of 500 meters on the southern slopes of the Medvednica mountain range, the castle was built in the 13th century, by the decision of Pope Innocent IV after the devastating attack of Batu's hordes, which devastated the Zagreb tract, the cities of Gradec and Kaptol.
On clear days, the city castle is visible from afar, its high main tower is especially visible.
The construction was carried out by Philip Thurier, Bishop of Zagreb, in 1249-1254. The influence of the customer was reflected in the speed and high quality of construction. It was luxuriously decorated, but was never attacked. The castle was heavily fortified: with double defensive walls and towers and narrow loopholes.
In 1590, the castle was damaged by an earthquake. Its owners lived at that time in another area and did not restore it, since by that time it had already lost its strategic importance, and also did not meet the new lifestyle and requirements for comfort.
It was only in 1974 that research began on both the preservation of the walls and the reconstruction of some parts of the castle.
There are plans to build a modern visitor center here in the near future. But even now various concerts and festivals are periodically held here.
