Grizane Castle - Kaštel Grižane, Grizane-Belgrad, Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, Republic of Croatia.
The ruins of Grižane Castle are located on cliffs above the village of the same name. The vast plain, abundant water, and rich arable land, protected by mountains, have favored the inhabitants here since the Bronze and Iron Ages.
The castle was built on the foundations of a Roman fort and belonged first to the Frankopan family and then to the Zrinski family. It was an irregular square with round towers at the corners. The building's unevenness was due to the terrain, as it was located on porous soil along a rocky cliff. The first mention of the castle, located between the villages of Grižane and Belgrade, was in 1225.
The castle was damaged several times by natural disasters—in 1323 during an earthquake and later by a landslide. And in 1671, after the failure of the Zrinski-Frankopan conspiracy and the confiscation of all property, the castle fell into disrepair and by the end of the 18th century was finally abandoned.
