Gradec Castle - Kaštel Gradec, Risika, Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, Republic of Croatia.
The powerful Frankopan family began their history as owners of an estate on the island of Krk. Their first castle, Gradec, dating back to the 12th century, is located in a forest near the road to the ancient town of Vrbnik. It was from here that several generations of Frankopans governed their lands.
The castle had the shape of an irregular hexagon, measuring 22 x 20 meters. It consisted of a small courtyard, an elongated main room, and a kitchen with a pantry. It's hard to believe today that such grandiose and important affairs could have been carried out in such a small and modest building, but at the time, it was truly the center of military, political, and administrative power. Folk legends and songs testify to life in the fortress: "When Frankopan was married, the road from Gradec to Vrbnik was carpeted."
Gradec was abandoned in the 15th century, and only ruins remain, some of which remain partially preserved.
