Rozmberk Castle - Hrad Rožmberk, Rozmberk nad Vltavou, South Bohemian Region, Czech Republic.

Rožmberk was built along an important trade route leading from Bohemia through the Vyšší Brod Pass to the wealthy Upper Danube region. First mentioned in 1250 under the name Rosenberg—its original German name—during the reign of King Wenceslaus I, the castle served as the residence of the lord and the administrative center of the estate during the lifetime of its probable founder, Vok of Rožmberk, and his immediate descendants. Despite its advantageous strategic location, the castle was captured several times. In 1551, the family estates were transferred to the sixteen-year-old Vilém of Rožmberk; this marked the beginning of a period of intensive construction work at Rožmberk, an era that also ranks among the most illustrious in the family's history. Following Vilém's death in 1592, Petr Vok took over the estate; under his rule, several castle interiors were remodeled under the influence of the Italian Renaissance. In 1601, Petr Vok transferred the Rožmberk estate to Jan Zrinský, who resided there until his death in 1612. The new owner commissioned extensive interior renovations in the Mannerist style, transforming the Gothic castle into a comfortable Renaissance residence. Turbulent events at the onset of the Thirty Years' War resulted in Rožmberk Castle falling into the hands of the Imperial general Karel Bonaventura Buquoy in 1620. The castle remained in the possession of the noble Buquoy family until 1945. Jiří Jan Jindřich Buquoy (1814–1883) was an avid collector of art and historical artifacts. Embracing the Romantic spirit of the 19th century, he carried out a grand plan to transform Rožmberk into a family museum. Extensive renovations were undertaken in the Romantic Gothic style, radically altering the castle's appearance. Having thus acquired its final form, the castle was opened to the public.
