Drazice Castle

The ruins of Dražice Castle are located 2 km from Benátky nad Jizerou, in the direction of Mladá Boleslav.
Dražice Castle is a unique example of castle architecture in Bohemia. The first written mention of Dražice dates back to 1264, though the castle itself was founded several years earlier. It was established on a relatively modest promontory above the Jizera River by the courtier Řehník of Litovice.
In 1424, during the Hussite Wars, Dražice Castle—then owned by Aleš Škopek of Dubá—was burned down by local Catholic lords. A subsequent attack on Dražice was reportedly launched in 1448 by the army of George of Poděbrady, as the brothers Jan and Bohuslav of Kunvald—owners of the Dražice estate—opposed him. The castle remained in use until the 1520s, when Fridrich of Donín had a new residence built in Benátky. The castle then ceased to be permanently inhabited; by 1599, when the Benátky estate was sold to Emperor Rudolf II, it was recorded as abandoned and in ruins.
