Opeka Castle

Opeka Castle - Dvorac Osedkalčija - Dvorac Ilok, Ilok, Vukovar-Srijem County, Republic of Croatia.

Ilok Castle, also known as Odescalchi Castle, is located in Ilok, the easternmost town in Croatia. It stands on a hill above the town at an altitude of 127 meters, overlooking the Danube and the Pannonian Plain.
This impressive fortress was built in the 15th century by the Croatian Viceroy and King of Bosnia, Nicholas Ilok. In the 16th century, Ilok was captured by the Ottomans. After defeating the Turks at the Battle of Vienna in 1683, Emperor Leopold I granted the castle and the title of Duke to Livio Odescalchi, nephew of Pope Innocent XI and a member of the powerful Italian aristocratic Odescalchi family. The castle remained in the family's ownership for the next two centuries. In the 18th century, they renovated it in the Baroque style.
In 1945, the castle was nationalized by the Yugoslav authorities. After restoration, it opened to visitors in 2010. The Ilok Town Museum is located on the two lower floors. The castle's wine cellars are among the most famous in Croatia.
It is currently a national property and one of Croatia's most important heritage sites.
