Castra Montanesium Fortress

Castra Montanesium Fortress - Крепост Кастра ад Монтанензиум, Montana, Montana Province, Republic of Bulgaria.

The ancient fortress is located on the hill "Kaleto" or "Gradishteto" in the southwestern part of Montana, about 40 m. above the city level. As a result of the archaeological excavations, a gate with a tower was discovered, which is a brilliant example of fortress construction in the 3rd - 4th centuries, barracks and other premises, a basilica and walls from the Roman era, Slavic dwellings and a sanctuary, as well as dwellings from the Stone-Copper Age in the lowest cultural layers.
The fortress was destroyed in the 6th - 7th centuries during an attack by Avars or Slavs. Subsequently, a Slavic settlement was created on its ruins.
