The Armory.
A heavy key opens the door to the world's largest private armory. The view is impressive. Over 50 complete suits of armor are housed here in the counts' "iron wardrobe." The Castel Coyra Armory collects only items belonging to the Match and Trapp families.
At first glance, two figures are particularly striking: a suit of armor with a red fabric bodice behind the balustrade to the left of the entrance door and an armored pair of a rider and horse on the rise at the narrower rear. The first is the oldest surviving suit of armor, made for the bailiff Match in 1365, while the other is the armor of James VI Trapp, dating from the mid-sixteenth century.
The armor mostly comes from workshops in Milan or Innsbruck and is striking in its completely varied and original appearance, and in some cases, its size. The penultimate of the Mac family, Ulrico IX, must have been a true giant. His armor, constructed around 1450, clearly dominates all the others: 2.10 meters high and weighing 45 kg.
Beyond the armor, the Castel-Coira armory is a true treasure. Many of the most interesting aspects are only noticeable at second or even third glance: crossbows, saddles, flasks, axes—these are just a few of the impressive testaments to a time now irreversibly past, yet still worthy of admiration.
The museum displays the works of famous masters:
Antonio Missaglia, Milan, Italy.
Hahs Seusenhofer, Innsbruck, Austria.
Hans Prunner, Innsbruck, Austria.
Michel Witz, the Younger, Innsbruck, Austria.
