Windegg Castle - Burgruine Windegg,  Schwertberg, Upper Austria, Republic of Austria.

Windegg Castle was built in the 12th century by canons of Regensburg Cathedral. It was first documented in 1208.

With the Windegg Castle ruins, located approximately 3 km north of Schwertberg, Upper Austria boasts arguably the finest example of a Romanesque castle with rusticated ashlar masonry.

The site has been owned by the Count Hoyos family of Schwertberg since 1911. Since 1980, after a last-minute thwarting of demolition plans, the castle ruins have been expertly renovated and preserved by members of the Windegg Working Group, who have contributed over 175,000 hours of volunteer labor.

In 1999, the Windegg Working Group succeeded in making the keep accessible again and opening the gallery inside the tower.
