Sooss Castle

Sooss Castle - Burgruine Sooß, Sooss, Lower Austria, Republic of Austria.

On a rocky outcrop stand the ruins of the former castle with remnants of the tower; adjoining it is the "Stöckel" (a small, outbuilding) with two gates; the so-called new castle is a two-story rectangular Renaissance building with a square tower. There is an arcaded walkway from 1901, a chapel, and a square building surrounded by round towers.
First documented in 1227; from the 12th to the 14th centuries, it belonged to the Sooß family, and from the 15th to the 16th centuries to the Schirmer family. Alterations and expansions took place in the 16th, 17th, and early 20th centuries. Until 1938, the complex was owned by Count Edgar Hoyos. At that time, it was furnished with exquisite pieces.
Today, an agricultural college occupies the building.
