   Lauenstein Castle is located north of Kronach, near the Franconian-Thuringian border. Its oldest parts date back to the 12th century; from the 13th to the 15th centuries, Lauenstein Castle was the residence of the once powerful Thuringian family of the Counts of Orlamünde. A comprehensive museum has been opened in the main castle's more than 20 rooms. In addition to armor and weapons, preserved furniture, a tiled stove, paintings, and wall and ceiling frescoes offer visitors a true picture of medieval castle life.
