Gomilica Castle - Kaštel Gomilica, Kastel Gomilica, Split-Dalmatia County, Republic of Croatia.
In the 16th century, Benedictine monks from Split built Gomilica Castle on a small island off the coast, on land donated to them by the King of Croatia, to protect peasants from Turkish raids. Stonemasons were hired for the work, and according to a contract signed in January 1529, they were paid 320 ducats. Construction was completed in 1545. Officially, the castle was named Castel Abbadessa, but locals called it Gomilica, apparently after the islet on which it was built.
The castle's plan indicated a size of 38 x 35 meters, with walls 7 meters high. Among other Split castles, Gomilica is unique. It is not a standalone tower or a fortified nobleman's palace, but a fortified country estate, reminiscent of an ancient villa. To enter the castle, you must cross a long arched bridge and enter the gates of the watchtower—the castle's most beautiful and most photographed tower.
On both sides, the tower is surrounded by two- and three-story buildings with intricately shaped roofs covered in tile and stone.
In 2014, Kaštel Gomilica Castle became a filming location for the TV series Game of Thrones.
Now the spirit of Braavos is forever preserved here, and upon arrival, you can try to find traces of Arya Stark.
