Waxenberg Castle - Burgruine Waxenberg, Waxenberg, Upper Austria, Republic of Austria.

The castle complex with its observation tower and the hunger tower (also known as the defensive tower) is the landmark of Waxenberg and a very attractive destination for excursions. It is one of the oldest castles in the Mühlviertel region. Waxenberg was first documented in 1146 and was founded by the Wilheringer family.

It was owned by the Babenbergs, the Habsburgs, and, from 1647, by the Starhemberg family, whose most famous ancestor, Heinrich Ernst Rüdiger, was the city commander and saved Vienna from the Turks.

Waxenberg was one of the largest estates in the Mühlviertel, stretching from the Danube to the Bohemian border, from the Haselgraben stream to the Mühl River.
