Golling Castle - Burg Golling, Golling an der Salzach, Salzburg, Republic of Austria.

The first mention of Golling in a property register compiled in 798 suggests that a wooden castle was already built at this strategically and geographically important location in the Early Middle Ages. The castle was rebuilt as a stone structure with a ring wall and parapet walk in the first half of the 13th century under Archbishop Eberhard II. From 1375 onwards, appointed administrators served at the castle – the administrator was the chief administrative officer, tax collector, and judge.

During the Peasants' War, Golling and its castle were severely damaged. In 1565, a permanent garrison of 50 men was stationed at the castle. In the 18th century, rooms were converted and kept ready for the sovereign. With the secularization of the ecclesiastical principality of Salzburg, the era of archiepiscopal administration came to an end. From then on, various rulers determined events in the region and at the castle. From 1805 to 1809, Salzburg was part of Austria for the first time, from 1810 to 1816 part of the Kingdom of Bavaria, and from 1816 onward, definitively part of Austria.

Until 1923, a district court existed as a successor to the former administrative court. Until the 1970s, a customs office and tax inspectorate were also located there.

Opening of Golling Castle Museum

The Golling Castle Museum opened in 1971. Designed by Regional Councilor and museum founder Erich Urbanek, it has been continuously expanded over the years. It has received numerous awards and offers annually changing special exhibitions in conjunction with a remarkable permanent collection of fossils, minerals, and clocks.

The listed castle has been owned by the market town of Golling since 2007 and underwent extensive and careful renovations in 2009/2010. The renovations successfully combined history and modernity to create a unique and atmospheric ambiance.

The Golling Tourism Association has been responsible for the management and marketing of the event area in the castle hall, foyer and courtyard with concert stage since 2014.
