Kunz (first name Konrad) Lochner was born in 1510 in Nuremberg. His father was an armorer. In 1544, Lochner became court armorer to Emperor Maximilian II with a starting salary of 14 forints 10 crowns, and in 1547, he established a permanent salary for the master. Kunz had two brothers, with whom he created his magnificent pieces, although they were not mentioned in imperial documents. Lochner often used images of tritons and sea monsters to decorate his armor. His clients included not only the imperial family but also the Spanish royal court, German electors and princes, and Polish-Lithuanian magnates.
